Ductile-to-Brittle Transition Temperature

The transition temperature is the point where a material changes from liquid to solid. Below this temperature, steel becomes brittle and loses its fluidity.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The transition temperature is the boundary between the liquid and solid state of a material. When cooling below this temperature, the steel crystallizes, leading to brittleness.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

If cooling is too fast and the transition temperature is not maintained, glass-hard martensite forms. This can lead to hot cracks and low toughness.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To minimize the risk of hot cracks, make sure to control the cooling rate. Use shielding gas or cooling systems to maintain the transition temperature and regulate the cooling speed.
