Ultrasonic transmission echotopography
Ultrasonic echo topography in transmission technique transmits ultrasonic waves through a part and measures the remaining energy on the opposite side. Local weakenings indicate inhomogeneities or inclusions.
Physical-Chemical Working Principle
Ultrasonic waves are sent into the component and penetrate it. Part of the energy is absorbed, reflected, or transmitted. The remaining energy is measured on the opposite side.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Inhomogeneities or inclusions in the material structure can attenuate the ultrasonic waves, which is recorded as echo signals. This indicates where the material is not homogeneous or what defects it contains.
Workshop Practice & Operating Instructions
Use a high-resolution ultrasonic device with high frequency (e.g., 5 MHz). Ensure that the couplant provides good transmission for the waves. The echo signals are displayed on a screen, where inhomogeneities appear as dark spots or lines.
