Phased Array Tandem Technique

An ultrasonic phased array tandem consists of several phased array probes working together to detect vertically oriented interfaces in the component. It improves accuracy and targeted detection of flaws.

Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism

The ultrasonic group transducer tandem uses multiple phased-array probes that emit with phase control. These probes work together to produce a strong, targeted beam field directed perpendicular to the surface. The phase shift of the ultrasonic waves allows precise focusing and higher resolution of interfaces.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Using the ultrasonic group transducer tandem increases the accuracy of flaw detection, especially for faulty interfaces inside the component. It can pick up the smallest defects and cracks that might be missed by other methods. However, incorrect use or inaccurate calibration can lead to detection errors, which in turn can cause misunderstandings and possible repair mistakes in the welding process.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To use the ultrasonic group transducer tandem effectively, the probes must be correctly calibrated and phase-controlled. The beam direction must be accurately aligned with the interface to be examined. A typical inspection time is 10-20 seconds per component section. It is important that the operator regularly checks and calibrates the probes to ensure detection remains reliable.
