Ultrasonic phased array with total focusing method

Ultrasonic phased array with Total Focusing Method is a high-resolution ultrasonic computing technique that synthetically focuses all individual signals from a matrix probe arrangement. This creates a detailed image of the flaw structure in the entire test volume.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The ultrasonic phased array method uses a matrix of many small sound sources that switch on and off at different phases. Through phase synchronization and shifting, these sources work together to produce a focused sound beam. The Total Focusing Method (TFM) exploits these principles to synthetically focus all individual signals, enabling a detailed image of the internal structure and flaws.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This technique is particularly useful for the precise detection of microstructural damage, inclusions, and cracks in complex components. It greatly enhances the detectability and accuracy of the inspection. A major drawback, however, is the complexity and higher cost of setting up and operating the system. Incorrect settings can lead to inaccurate or missed results.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To effectively use ultrasonic phased array with TFM, the following steps must be observed:

1. Calibration: Ensure the probe is properly calibrated and the phase synchronization is set.

2. Adjust settings: Adjust the phase shifts and focus parameters according to the material being tested and the desired resolution.

3. Performing the scan: Carry out the inspection pass and analyze the generated image for flaws or anomalies.

4. Create report: Document the results in detail, including the exact location and type of indications.
