Ultrasonic Phased Array Sector Scan

Ultrasonic phased array sector scan is a precise testing method that steers a sound beam over an angular range by time-delayed excitation of individual crystals. It produces two-dimensional cross-sectional images and improves the detection of cracks or defects.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The phased array sector scan uses multiple ultrasonic crystals that are activated with time delays. This allows the sound beam to be steered within a desired angular range and focused precisely on specific areas of the test volume. The time-delayed activation creates phase differences that result in a focused sound wave.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This method is particularly useful for the precise detection of flaws or cracks in complex components. It increases the sensitivity and resolution of ultrasonic testing, which means smaller defects can be detected better. However, inaccurate phasing or incorrect activation can lead to inaccurate results, which can undermine confidence in the inspection.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To perform an ultrasonic phased array sector scan, the following steps must be observed:

1. Set up equipment: Ensure the phased array ultrasonic device is properly calibrated and set.

2. Position crystals: Position the ultrasonic crystals on the surface of the material to be tested.

3. Program activation: Program the time-delayed activation of the crystals to achieve the desired angular range.

4. Analyze sector images: Analyze the generated two-dimensional sector images for flaws or cracks and document the results.
