Ultrasonic Phased Array Sectorial Scan

Ultrasonic phased array sector sweep is a technique for rapid testing of welds by electronic sweeping of the ultrasonic angle beam in a sector. It allows covering a wide cross-sectional volume in one pass and speeds up testing.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Phased array ultrasonic sector scanning uses a series of ultrasonic resistances whose phase shift is controlled. This allows electronic sweeping of the angle beam within a defined sector. Phase synchronization of the resistances makes it possible to cover a wide scan volume in a single pass.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This technique is especially useful for inspecting welds with complex geometry or large areas. It increases inspection efficiency and accuracy because it collects more data in less time. However, an improperly adjusted phase shifter can cause detection errors, leading to missed defects.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To use phased array ultrasonic sector scanning effectively, follow these steps:

1. Calibration: Make sure the probe is properly calibrated and the phase shifters are set to the specified values.

2. Sector Setting: Adjust the sector angle to match the specific geometry of the part being inspected.

3. Scanning Time: Use a continuous scan to ensure full coverage of the scan volume.

4. Post-Inspection: Review the captured data for anomalies and perform a manual inspection if needed.
