Variable delay line ultrasonic transducers
Ultrasonic probes with variable delay line allow flexible adaptation to uneven surfaces, improving detection sensitivity and optimizing sound coupling.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
The delay line affects how strongly the ultrasound penetrates the material. A variable delay line allows adjusting the sound amplitude and phasing on uneven surfaces to ensure optimal detection of flaws or cracks.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
On uneven components, a fixed delay line angle can lead to inaccurate results because the sound is not evenly distributed over the surface. A variable delay line prevents this and increases the accuracy of the inspection.
Workshop practice & instructions
Choose an ultrasonic probe with a variable delay line when uneven surfaces need to be inspected. Adjust the angle of the delay line to the geometry of the component. A range from 5° to 10° is often sufficient for many applications. Make sure the probe is always positioned perpendicular to the surface to ensure consistent testing.
