Ultrasonic Pulse-Echo Method

Ultrasonic pulse-echo technique uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws in metals. It is a non-destructive testing method that analyzes echoes from interfaces or defects.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

Ultrasonic pulse-echo (UPE) uses sound waves with frequencies between 0.5 and 15 MHz. These waves are sent into the metal and reflected at boundaries or flaws. The returning echoes are recorded and analyzed.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

UPE is especially useful for checking weld quality. It can spot microstructural flaws, porosity, cracks, or irregularities. Misreading the results can lead to inaccurate findings, which risks the integrity of the part.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

• Equipment selection: Pick a device with the right frequency (e.g., 5 MHz for thin layers).

• Preparation: Remove surface conditions and dirt.

• Settings: Adjust the echo signals to get clear reflections.

• Interpretation: Analyze the echoes with specialized software.
