Ultrasonic Transducer

An ultrasonic transducer converts electrical signals into sound waves and vice versa. It is the core of an ultrasonic testing device for flaw detection.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

An ultrasonic transducer uses electro-acoustic efficiency to convert electrical pulses into mechanical vibrations (sound waves) and vice versa. This allows sound waves to be coupled into test objects and the feedback to be captured as an electrical signal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The ultrasonic transducer is crucial for the precision and effectiveness of ultrasonic testing. Faulty conversion can lead to inaccurate results, which can cause misunderstandings in flaw detection. This can bring risks in construction and production, as important defects are not recognized.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To use the ultrasonic transducer correctly, make sure the electrical voltage is stable and the device valve is set correctly. The transducer frequency should be set to the specified value for the specific test (usually 5 MHz for metals). If there are problems with signal reception, check the couplant and make sure the test object is clean.
