Ultraviolet Radiation Protection Factor

The ultraviolet radiation protection factor (UVSF) measures the shielding performance of textiles and visors against ultraviolet rays during arc welding. A higher factor means more protection.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is high-energy electromagnetic waves emitted from the anode during arc welding. UV rays can destroy molecular bonds in skin tissues and cause damage.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

UV radiation can cause burns, skin damage, and long-term health problems. Textiles with a low UVPF offer little protection and increase the risk to the worker.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use faceshields with a UVPF of at least 4:1. This provides adequate protection against UV rays. Make sure the faceshields are regularly inspected and replaced when necessary.
