Strain-Induced Residual Stresses

Forming-induced residual stresses arise from uneven plastic deformation during forming of steel. They affect mechanical properties and can lead to cracks.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Forming-induced residual stresses arise when different parts of a workpiece are deformed to different extents. This can be caused by uneven stresses or temperature differences during forming.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

These stresses can lead to cracking and fracture, especially if they are not properly balanced. They also affect the strength and formability of the material.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To minimize forming-induced residual stresses, uniform stresses and temperatures should be maintained during forming. In welding, it is important to run the weld in the direction of the highest stress and to ensure careful cooling after welding.
