Uneven Weld Toe Transition

An irregular weld transition is an uneven transition from the weld metal to the base material, leading to higher notch sensitivity.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

An uneven weld transition results from differing chemical compositions or mechanical stresses between the weld metal and the base metal. This can cause unequal thermal expansion, which in turn creates stress and notch sensitivity.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

An uneven weld transition raises the risk of cracks and hot cracks. Unequal expansion can create local stress zones that put the material under pressure and lead to grooves or splits. This can also shorten the weld's service life.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid an uneven weld transition, pre-treat the materials evenly before welding—this includes proper cleaning and using the right filler. Also, weld within the correct temperature range to get a homogeneous structure. For heavy materials or high stresses, additional notching may be needed.
