Irregular width
Irregular weld width occurs due to uneven travel speed or unsteady torch handling. It indicates a lack of skill and can lead to stress variations.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The bead width is set during welding by the travel speed and the torch guidance. When these are uneven, irregular areas form in the metal.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Uneven bead widths cause stress differences within the component wall. This can lead to cracks or distortion, especially under mechanical load. It also hurts the toughness and the overall material behavior.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To avoid uneven bead widths, keep the travel speed constant and guide the torch steadily. If you have problems, check the welding machine and torch regularly. Use a precision pipe welding head and adjust the settings accordingly.
