Supercooled melt volume
Undercooled molten volume is the state where liquid steel is held below its solidification temperature. This is necessary for crystallization.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Undercooled weld pool forms when liquid steel is held below its solidification temperature after welding. This prevents immediate crystallization and allows controlled solidification.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
If the weld pool is not sufficiently undercooled, incomplete solidification can occur. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces the mechanical properties of the weld.
Workshop practice & instructions
To undercool the weld pool, the weld should be cooled in a cooler environment (e.g., water bath) after welding. The temperature should be controlled so that it remains within the critical temperature window to ensure optimal solidification.
