Submerged Arc Strip Cladding

An SAW process utilizing a metallic strip instead of a wire as the electrode beneath a flux layer. It is used for large-area deposition of corrosion-resistant claddings onto unalloyed steels.

Submerged arc strip cladding is a process where a strip serves as the electrode and the powder shields the weld area from the atmosphere. The powder does not protect against corrosion, but forms the slag and stabilizes the arc. You must align the strip position and powder feed cleanly, otherwise the weld bead will be unstable or pick up impurities. If the contact between strip and workpiece is not clean, the process breaks down and you won't get proper fusion. Make sure the powder is dry and free of impurities, then the process runs stable.
