Incomplete root penetration

The weld bead doesn't penetrate fully through the root opening and leaves it incompletely filled. This cuts down the joint's mechanical load capacity.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The weld bead is a special tool that bores through the steel during welding while being filled with molten filler. If the bead does not fully penetrate the root opening or does not completely fill it, an incomplete weld root occurs.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

An incomplete weld root can cause several problems. It reduces the mechanical load capacity of the joint because the steel is not fully penetrated and filled. This increases the risk of cracks or fractures under mechanical load. Furthermore, it can lead to uneven stress distribution, which in turn can cause hot cracking.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To ensure a complete weld root, the following measures must be observed:

• Bead size and design: Use a bead with the correct size and a suitable design for the specific steel.

• Welding parameters: Keep welding parameters such as temperature, voltage, and time constant and within the specified limits.

• Cleaning: Make sure the root opening is clean and free of contaminants before starting the welding process.

• Monitoring: Monitor the welding process continuously and correct the parameters as needed to ensure full penetration.
