Insufficient Throat Thickness

Insufficient weld throat is when the required weld thickness is not met, usually in fillet welds due to incorrect torch guiding. This leads to inadequate load-bearing capacity under load.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The weld size affects the mechanical strength of the weld. A weld that's too thin can't take enough load and performs poorly under stress.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Insufficient weld size raises the risk of cracking and fracture. The weld can't be loaded enough, which can lead to safety issues in service.

Workshop practice & instructions

Check the torch position regularly and make sure you're guiding the torch correctly. Make sure the weld size is at least 1.5 to 2 mm, depending on the welding process and the material you're working with.
