UV radiation in the electric arc

UV radiation from arc welding is high-energy, short-wavelength electromagnetic waves that can damage skin and eyes. Full protective clothing is essential.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

UV radiation in the arc is generated by the electric field and the hot electrode. It consists of short-wavelength electromagnetic waves with high energy that interact quickly with biological organic material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

UV radiation can cause skin burns and painful keratitis. It can also damage DNA, leading to long-term health problems. Without protection, serious burns or vision damage can occur.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Always use full protective clothing, including UV-protected glasses and gloves. Make sure no skin or eyes are directly exposed to the light source. Keep at least 30 cm away from the arc.
