Asymmetric V-Groove
Asymmetric V-groove is a single-sided beveled joint for V-grooves, used in confined access or when plate thicknesses differ. It ensures thermal uniformity during melting.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Asymmetric V-groove changes the bevel geometry of a V-groove, making one side steeper than the other. This affects heat distribution during melting of the steel. The steeper side absorbs more heat and melts faster.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks When Welding
The asymmetric bevel ensures a more uniform melting process, which improves weld quality. Without this asymmetry, when access is restricted or plate thicknesses differ, uneven melting can occur, leading to porosity and inhomogeneity in the microstructure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
When access is tight or plate thicknesses differ, an asymmetric V-groove is required. The steeper side should be set so that it meets the side with the smaller plate thickness. A typical bevel angle is about 1 to 2 degrees. This ensures uniform melting and prevents porosity.
