V-groove geometry
The V-groove geometry is a single-bevel joint for moderate plate thicknesses, ensuring full access to the root.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The V-groove geometry has an angular shape with a pointed opening. As a result, the weld is fully accessible near the root, which is decisive for full penetration and removal of contamination.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
A correct V-groove geometry prevents pore formation and improves the strength of the weld. Wrong shape or too large an opening leads to uneven deformation and high stress build-up, which can cause cracks and fractures.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For a V-groove geometry, an included angle of 60° and a depth of 1.5× the sheet thickness are recommended. Make sure the groove is clean and free of contamination before you weld. For heavy metals or high stress requirements, additional preparation like grinding may be needed.
