Vanadium Carbide Precipitation

Precipitation of submicroscopic vanadium carbides during cooling, causing effective secondary hardening.

Vanadium binds carbon in steel into fine carbides. They precipitate during cooling and make the weld stronger and tougher. But if you cool too fast, the carbides stay too fine and the structure becomes too hard and brittle. So let the weld cool slowly, then you get a clean, tough structure without risk of cracking.
