Vanadium fine-grain effect

Vanadium prevents the growth of large grains in austenite during heating, which increases the toughness and strength of the weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Vanadium forms finely dispersed carbonitrides in austenite. These prevent the growth of large grains by restricting the diffusion rate of carbon and nickel.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Too high vanadium content can lead to increased hardness and lower toughness, coarsening the microstructure. This can result in cracks and breakdown of the weld.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

Use vanadium in filler materials at levels from 0.1 to 0.3 % for optimal results. Make sure the weld cools slowly and evenly to preserve austenite.
