Strain-Based Weldability Index
The deformation-weldability index measures how well a material can be deformed while being welded. It helps prevent weld metal separation.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The Deformation-Weldability Index (VSBI) evaluates the ductility and deformation capacity of a material in the critical high-temperature range during welding. This index indicates how well the material can be deformed at high temperatures without breaking or separating.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
A low VSBI means that the material tends to break or separate easily during welding. This leads to poor weld quality and increases the risk of cracks and fractures. A high VSBI, on the other hand, ensures stable deformation and prevents separation, resulting in a safe and high-quality weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To take the VSBI into account, you should take the following steps:
• Use materials with a sufficiently high VSBI for the respective welding type and temperature.
• Ensure that the material remains stable in the critical temperature range and does not cool too quickly or deform too much.
• Monitor the deformation of the material during welding and take measures to control the deformation rate if necessary.
