Deformation Mechanism
Microscopic processes such as dislocation motion or twinning that lead to plastic indentation during hardness testing. They determine the resistance of the crystal lattice.
Deformation mechanisms describe how a material plastically deforms under load. This happens in the microstructure through dislocation movements or twinning. In welding, this is important because heat input and subsequent cooling change the microstructure and thus affect deformability. If you're not careful, the material can become hard and brittle or, in the worst case, crack. So you have to choose the right material and proper heat management so that the component doesn't break later.
