Vermicular Graphite

A worm-like graphite morphology in cast iron exhibiting mechanical properties intermediate between flake and spheroidal graphite.

Vermicular graphite is basically the compromise between gray cast iron and ductile iron. The heat input during welding must be kept low, otherwise the graphite transforms and you get hard, cracked zones. Before welding, grind clean and preheat the area, but don't overdo it. After welding, let it cool slowly to avoid building up stresses. If you follow this, the structure remains stable and you won't have any surprises during machining.
