High-Low Misalignment
Mismatch irregularity is a geometric deviation due to offset edges of the materials being joined, which leads to notching effects.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Misalignment irregularity occurs due to different heights or unevenness at the edges of the steel plates to be welded. These offsets can occur during the welding process and lead to uneven stresses in the structure.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Misalignment irregularity can cause notching, i.e., uneven stress and pressure distribution in the weld. This increases the risk of cracks and fractures in service. It can also lead to reduced mechanical properties such as strength and toughness.
Workshop practice & action instructions
To avoid misalignment irregularities, the steel plates to be welded should be accurately aligned and made flat before welding. A precision of ±0.1 mm is common. In case of large misalignment irregularity, additional machining or adjustment of the workpieces may be necessary.
