Wear resistance

A material's resistance to material loss through friction, abrasion or impact.

Wear is the gradual material loss at the surface — through abrasive particles (abrasion), through sticking and tearing (adhesion) or through repeated loading (fatigue). Wear resistance is the resistance to this. It depends mainly on hardness: martensite and hard carbides (chromium, tungsten, vanadium carbides) make the material resistant. That is why wear steels and hardfacing are so hard — they trade toughness for wear resistance.
