Vertical-up welding position
Vertical-up position is a welding position where the weld metal is built from bottom to top. It improves root fusion and increases strength values, especially for thick plates in structural steelwork.
Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus
The vertical-up position causes the weld metal to be pulled upward under the stress of the welding process. This prevents the formation of porosity and improves the cell structure in the microstructure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
If applied incorrectly, the weld metal can be pulled too strongly, leading to stress cracks. It is important to ensure continuous movement and the correct speed.
Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen
Use the vertical-up position for thick plates in steel construction. Make sure the weld metal is continuously pulled upward and the speed of the buildup is kept at about 1 mm/s. Monitor the stress and correct if necessary.
