Tramp Element

Contaminant elements are unwanted metals or chemical elements that unintentionally get into the scrap and adversely affect material properties.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

Impurity elements are foreign elements that unintentionally get introduced during the metallization process or during welding. These elements can cause chemical reactions with the metal, leading to phase transformations and changes in the microstructure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The introduction of impurity elements can lead to a variety of problems. For example, they can impair the strength and hardness of the material, and cause phase transformations such as the dissolution of copper in aluminum alloys or the formation of hot cracks in steel. These impurities also increase the risk of corrosion and can shorten the service life of components.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

To minimize the introduction of impurity elements, it is important to carefully carry out the scrap and cleaning process. This includes the correct selection and application of cleaning chemicals as well as the performance of pre-treatments such as the removal of corrosion layers or surface conditioning. Additionally, tools and welding equipment should be regularly cleaned and checked to ensure that no foreign elements are incorporated.
