Distortion

Distortion is an uneven change in shape due to uneven heat input, which can lead to mechanical stress and damage.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Distortion occurs when different parts of a component heat up unevenly. This leads to unequal expansion and stresses within the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Uneven distortion can cause mechanical stress, deformation, or even damage in the component. This can lead to cracks or impair strength.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

To minimize distortion, ensure even heat input and control cooling rate. When welding steels, it is important to stay within the critical temperature window (e.g., t8/5) to achieve a homogeneous structure.
