Distortion Control

Distortion control is the procedure to minimize shape and dimensional deviations in the weld. It ensures the geometric accuracy of the assembly.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Distortion control refers to controlling and regulating the movement (displacement) of parts during welding. This process influences the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Uncontrolled distortion can lead to uneven stress distribution, which in turn causes shape and dimensional deviations, cracks, or failure of the assembly. Faulty distortion control can therefore increase the risk of failure and reduce the service life of the weld.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

To ensure effective distortion control, the following measures must be observed:

• Distortion direction and stability: Parts must be moved in the proper direction to create even stress. This can be ensured with special welding equipment and tools.

• Temperature management: Temperature during welding must be controlled to influence the metal structure and allow even distortion movement. Uneven heat distribution can lead to stress buildup.

• Distortion gap: The gap between parts must be precisely maintained to ensure a homogeneous weld and even distortion movement. This can be ensured with precision tools and gauges.

• Welding parameters: Parameters such as current, voltage, and duration must be set accurately to ensure even distortion movement. Incorrect settings can lead to uneven stress distribution.
