Preheat Temperature Specification

The establishment of a minimum base material temperature prior to welding to reduce the cooling rate and prevent cracking.

Preheating is important so the workpiece doesn't cool too fast and you don't get cracks. The right temperature depends on material and process, check the data sheet. If you weld too cold, the part can crack; if too hot, you'll distort the workpiece or ruin the structure. Heat the part evenly and don't let it heat up too fast.
