Flat welding position

A welding position where the weld is performed from above in a horizontal plane, providing optimal conditions aided by gravity. It allows for maximum deposition rates and deep penetration.

The overhead position is a welding position where the weld is worked from above and the molten pool lies in a 'trough'. Gravity helps you guide the pool cleanly and get good penetration without the material running away. Make sure you keep the heat under control. If you put in too much heat, the pool gets too big and slumps. With too little heat, you won't get clean penetration and the weld won't bond properly. In practice: prepare cleanly, find the right travel speed, and always keep an eye on the pool. Then the weld will be tight and clean.
