Artificial aging

Targeted strength enhancement of a material by holding it at moderately elevated temperatures. This accelerates and controls the precipitation aging process.

Warm age-hardening is an annealing process that runs after welding or before machining. You heat the part evenly to the right temperature, hold the heat for a while, and then let it cool down slowly. This makes the structure soft and low-stress, the material is easier to machine and does not crack as quickly. If you do not hit the temperature or cool too fast, the part becomes hard and brittle, and you will have trouble in further machining or in operation.
