Water shroud cooling
Water-jacket cooling in plasma cutting: A ring-shaped water curtain around the plasma jet minimizes fumes and reduces thermal stresses, improving dimensional accuracy.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The water jacket forms an insulating shield around the hot plasma arc. The contact between the water and the arc absorbs energy and cools the workpiece locally, which reduces thermal stress.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Reduces thermal stresses in the component, which minimizes fume formation and improves dimensional accuracy. Incorrect application can lead to uneven cooling and cause material changes such as grain coarsening or phase transformations.
Shop Practice & Action Instructions
Make sure the water jacket is clean and flows continuously. The thickness of the jacket should be about 1 to 2 mm. Monitor cooling rates and adjust the water flow accordingly.
