Hydrogen-Induced Cracking

Hydrogen accumulates in stressed areas and leads to brittle failure of layers or shells.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Hydrogen diffuses into the metal and is trapped at areas of high stress. This can lead to local embrittlement and cracking.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Under high restraint or with materials with high hydrogen content, hydrogen-induced cracking can occur. This leads to brittle failure of layers, impairing the service life and safety of components.

Workshop practice & instructions

Avoid high stresses during welding. Use suitable shielding measures and control the hydrogen content in the metal. If suspected, perform a hydrogen analysis.
