Hydrogen-Scavenging Wire

A specialized consumable whose alloying elements trap diffusing hydrogen within the microstructure or assist its outgassing to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking. It is applied in high-strength steels.

Hydrogen-compensating wire (also known as low-hydrogen filler material) binds hydrogen in the weld metal so it can't diffuse into the heat-affected zone. That's important with high-strength steels because hydrogen causes porosity and cracking there. You mainly use this wire when welding steels prone to cold cracking. Make sure the wire is stored dry and clean, and let the weld cool slowly so the hydrogen can safely outgas.
