Hydrogen Trap Capacity

Amount of hydrogen that can be reversibly or irreversibly bound to lattice defects, dislocations, or inclusions within the material.

Hydrogen can settle at lattice defects in certain steels. During welding, this is a problem because if the hydrogen can't escape, it makes the structure brittle and can lead to cracks, especially if the part cools quickly. So you have to ensure that the hydrogen can escape. You do this with controlled cooling and dry filler materials. With higher carbon steels, the risk is greater, so you have to be especially careful and let it cool rather slowly.
