Low-Hydrogen Welding Consumable

A welding filler that minimizes hydrogen and prevents cold cracking in high-strength steels.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Low-hydrogen filler metal contains reduced amounts of hydrogen, which lowers the diffusion of hydrogen into the metal during the welding process. This prevents hydrogen from being trapped in the weld and causing cold cracks as it cools.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

In high-strength steels, a high hydrogen content can lead to cold cracks (HIC), which often appear after the weld cools. Low-hydrogen filler reduces this risk and improves the mechanical strength of the weld.

Shop practice & action points

Use low-hydrogen filler for high-strength steels like martensitic or austenitic. Make sure the filler is properly dried and the weld cools down well after welding. If needed, a post-hydrogen removal (PHR) treatment can be used to get rid of leftover hydrogen.
