Hydrogen Effusion

Natural or thermally assisted out-diffusion of atomic hydrogen from the metal lattice to prevent cracking.

Hydrogen in the weld metal is a classic problem. After welding, hydrogen migrates into the heat-affected zone and can cause cracks there if the component cools too quickly and becomes brittle. The remedy is to give the hydrogen time to diffuse out. You do this by letting the component cool slowly after welding or by holding it directly at the stress-relieving temperature. Also make sure that the filler material and the component surface are dry and free of contaminants, as these are the main source of hydrogen. This prevents cold cracking and the part will withstand the load.
