Waterjet Abrasive Medium

Waterjet abrasives are fine-grained solid particles mixed into high-pressure waterjets to peel and machine hard metals or heat-sensitive materials.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Water jet abrasives consist of fine solid particles such as silica, aluminum oxide, or copper. These particles are propelled by a high-pressure water jet at high velocity onto the workpiece. Through mechanical energy and the hard surface of the particles, the material is micro-structured and abraded without the need for melting.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Using water jet abrasives can result in a fine, smooth surface that is better suited for welding. However, overly aggressive processing can contaminate the material or impair its mechanical properties. It is important to precisely control the pressure and particle quantity to achieve optimal results.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

Use a high-pressure water jet with an appropriate abrasive. Start at low pressure and gradually increase until the desired processing is achieved. Continuously monitor the workpiece surface for contamination or excessive sharpening. For heat-sensitive materials, take special care to avoid generating excessive temperatures.
