Soft Annealing of Tool Steel
Annealing process just below the transformation temperature to produce a soft microstructure for subsequent machining operations.
You do soft annealing to make the steel soft and easy to machine, for example for cutting or cold forming. You heat the steel to a temperature just below the transformation temperature and then let it cool slowly. If you anneal too long or too hot, it gets too soft and loses strength; too short does nothing. The goal is a uniform, soft structure that doesn't crack.
