Soft Solder Shear Strength Parameter
The soft solder shear strength value indicates how strong a soft soldered joint is against shear forces at room temperature. It depends on the solder composition and the joint gap width.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
The soft solder shear strength value (SFKW) describes the mechanical resistance of a soft solder joint to shear forces at room temperature. It is determined by the solder composition and the gap width.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
A low SFKW can lead to shear fractures or deformation of the soft solder joint. This can happen particularly when the solder elements are different materials or the gap width is too large. A high SFKW, on the other hand, ensures a more robust and safer joint.
Workshop practice & instructions
To achieve a high SFKW, pay attention to the following points:
• Use solder elements of the same material: This minimizes stress and prevents shear fractures.
• Control the gap width: A gap width that is too large can lower the SFKW. The optimal gap width depends on the solder alloy used, but generally it should be between 0.2 and 0.5 mm.
• Check the solder composition: Use solder alloys with high shear strength, such as silicon or titanium. These additions improve the mechanical resistance of the soft solder joint.
