Widmanstätten Needle Formation

A microstructural pattern of crystallographically oriented ferrite plates or needles precipitating along specific planes of the austenite lattice. This typically occurs during moderately fast cooling of coarse-grained structures.

Widmannstätten structure forms when you cool the workpiece too slowly after welding. The austenite then doesn't transform normally, but forms coarse, needle-shaped ferrite plates that grow along certain planes in the grain. This stuff is brittle and prone to cracking, so you don't want it in a weld.
