Repeatability of hardness testing
Repeatability in hardness testing shows how accurately a testing device measures the same hardness on repeated tests of the same specimen. A high value means low scatter and thus a reliable measurement.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The hardness of a material is determined by its mechanical strength, which results from stress and strain under load. Repeatability assesses how consistently the testing device can measure this property.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Poor repeatability can lead to unreliable hardness readings. This can cause missing or excessive hardness in the weld to go undetected, posing risks to the mechanical stability of the component.
Workshop Practice & Action Items
To ensure high repeatability, the testing device should be calibrated regularly. Measurements should be taken under identical conditions (temperature, stress). A typical target for repeatability in Brinell hardness testing is ± 1 HBW.
