Ultrasonic Angle Beam Probe
An angle probe for ultrasound directs transverse waves into the test object at a set angle. This enables detection of flaws not parallel to the surface.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
An angle beam probe for ultrasound uses a special crystal structure to generate transverse waves. These waves are fed into the test object at a defined angle and can detect flaws perpendicular to the surface.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Using an angle beam probe allows detection of internal flaws, such as cracks or corrosion, that are not directly visible on the surface. However, incorrect settings of the sound entry angle can lead to inaccurate results and cause important flaws to be missed.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use an angle beam probe with a fixed sound entry angle, e.g., 45 degrees for steel. Make sure the probe is placed perpendicular to the surface of the test object and the wave direction is set correctly. Accurate setting of the angle is critical for reliable results.
