Angular distortion

Angular distortion of joined parts caused by uneven transverse shrinkage across the weld thickness. It is especially prominent in V-groove welds.

Angular distortion occurs because the weld has more weld metal at the top than at the bottom. When cooling, the top contracts more and the plates tilt towards each other. You notice this especially with thick plates and single-sided welds. If you don't want the distortion, weld the joint from both sides or pre-set the parts in opposite direction. Clamp the parts well, then everything stays within tolerance.
