Angular misalignment

Angular misalignment is the deviation of the joining partners from the planned angular position. It leads to unwanted additional stresses and can cause cracks.

Physico-chemical mechanism

Angular misalignment means the parts you're joining don't quite fit. That causes stresses because the materials want to spring back to their natural position.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Misalignment can lead to uneven stress distribution and crack formation. The extra stresses can also weaken the weld itself, which is especially risky under high loads.

Shop practice & how to handle it

To keep from misaligning, set your parts up carefully and hold them in position. Use clamps or fixtures, and double-check the angle. If you need to, use guides or a laser to keep everything spot-on.
