Eddy Current Impedance
Eddy current impedance is the resistance of a test coil, influenced by induced eddy currents in the workpiece. It detects cracks and conductivity differences.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Impedance in eddy current testing is determined by the alternating resistances and inductances in the workpiece. Induced eddy currents generate a magnetic flux, which in turn causes an electrical impedance.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Increased resistance can indicate cracks or differences in conductivity. Incorrect test conditions can lead to false results, endangering quality assurance.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use a test coil with the correct frequency and voltage. Make sure the workpiece surface is clean and contact is proper. The measurement should be done at constant temperatures to get accurate results.
