Eddy current surface probe

The eddy current contact probe generates a magnetic field that is disturbed by surface defects. It is used for fatigue crack detection on complex components and welds.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The eddy current probe generates a magnetic flux through the electromagnet. This flux is disturbed by surface flaws such as cracks or fatigue, leading to a change in the detector signal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The eddy current probe is especially useful for inspecting welds and complex component geometries for fatigue. Incorrect interpretation of the signal can lead to inaccurate results, posing risks to component safety.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use the eddy current probe in a clean environment and make sure the electromagnet is properly calibrated. The scanning speed should be between 0.5 and 1 mm/s. If you get unusual results, do a detailed inspection.
